RFPTN PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS TO MEMBERS ON THE MoU BETWEEN NBTE AND PCN AND ITS IMPACT ON DIRECT ENTRY ADMISSION CHALLENGES

Dear Members of the Reformed Forum of Pharmacy Technicians in Nigeria (RFPTN),

I wish to address a crucial development impacting the future of pharmacy technicians in Nigeria. On April 17, 2024, a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN).

Understanding the MoU

This MoU signifies a shift in the educational landscape for pharmacy technicians. The NBTE will prioritize accrediting the National Diploma in Pharmacy Technician program, effectively phasing out the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Pharmaceutical Technology. However, current HND students are assured of completing their studies with additional privilege of regularization with the  Pharmacy Council of Nigeria by passing National Pre-Certifcation Examination (NPCE) leading to certification and licensure to practice as Pharmacy Technicians. More importantly, the MoU paves the way for collaborative accreditation of Pharmacy Technician programs by NBTE and PCN.

Benefits for RFPTN Members

The MoU holds immense potential to address the longstanding challenges faced by RFPTN members regarding direct entry admissions into higher institutions. By establishing a standardized National Diploma in Pharmacy Technician program, this agreement could lead to:

1. Enhanced Recognition of Qualifications: The standardized program will ensure uniformity and recognition of pharmacy technician qualifications across institutions. This can significantly reduce hurdles for RFPTN members seeking admission into degree programs.

2. Smoother Entry into Degree Programs: A well-defined qualification process paves the way for smoother entry for qualified pharmacy technicians into relevant degree programs. This can open doors for career advancement and specialization within the field.

3. Improved Career Prospects: The MoU can contribute to improved career prospects for RFPTN members. With standardized qualifications and potentially smoother entry into degree programs, members can pursue higher qualifications.

The RFPTN’s Role and the Road Ahead

The MoU signing marks a positive step towards a well-defined career path for pharmacy technicians in Nigeria. The RFPTN remains committed to monitoring the implementation of this agreement and advocating for the interests of our members. We will continue to provide updates and clarifications as we receive them.

I encourage you to stay informed about further developments while giving you the assurance that RFPTN LEADERS will never relent on facilitating the restoration of Direct Entry for members by JAMB. If you have any questions or require additional information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the RFPTN leadership within the various states across the nation.

SHAGBA HUMPHREY T.

(RFPTN President)
